Summer sun tan

A tan is the result of radiation damage to skin cells. Contrary to belief, there is no such thing as a safe tan and the Italian's don't appear to have caught on (and they are not the only ones). With their heads buried in the sand, and the sun warming up their core, the population is thoroughly roasted every August when the office doors close for the summer break. The disrespect shown towards the suns radiation is embarrassing.

Sun exposure can't be avoided, but the quantity these people are soaking every summer season is destructive. Plus their precious red/brown coat is used to judge everyone who played it sun smart. Encouraging the uninformed to make poor choices for the coming seasons. Tanning could not be more popular and the social pressure is immense (having experienced it first hand).

The example we set today, will set the precedence for a healthier future.

My voice comes in the form of photography, I lack the ability to communicate my concerns in words (I have tried) and chose to show the extreme damage the everyday person is inflicting on themselves visually.

Out with the new and in with the old

Out with the new and in with the old, the vintage trend has steam rolled through society and launched a sub culture embraced by the bold. The idea is simple, visit an OP-shop to grab a bargain or indulge in  designer pieces tailor made to comfort your imagination. Adding a little vintage flare to your closet is a fantastic way to stand out from the norm, self-expression through fashion runs deep through the veins of society and the embrace deserves to be celebrated.

Ink

One man’s skin is another’s canvas. The booming tattoo trend racing through society is bewildering. Tattooing was once a key component of cultural and religious ceremonies used to identify belonging and rank. However, with the introduction of laser tattoo removal, the once permanent nature of the ink is no longer a pressing concern. In-effect, opening the floodgates to a new form of re-workable personalization in rampant demand.

The Untouched Wild West

Raw beauty is sculpted from the elements colliding with the north/west coast of New Zealand creating an unimaginable landscape. The iron sand base sprouts vegetation unique to the region, the dunes are humbling, the roar of the ocean slapping the coastline is cleansing and the dramatic isolation from civilisation sets a timeless pace. As days drift by, the memories forged in the bitting winds off the coast are mummified in the sand.

Revealing - 'The heart of Venice'

I am celebrating my first year in Italy with the release of the project ‘The heart of Venice'. A project spanning across the last five years (my first visit to the historic city of Venice was in 2012), and my work pays tribute to the origins of the city and its people.

Venice is an international icon, a bucket list item for many and one of the most enchanting cities in the world. Approximately 55 000 permanent residents call the world heritage site home, plus an additional daily influx of 60 000 visitors make it increasingly difficult to find peace amongst the disorder. Non the less, glimpses of the city’s most beautiful elements remain in rare moments of clarity when the chaos briefly subsides. Exposing the traditional foundations which have kept the city afloat.
